Loyalton 484Loyalton, the only incorporated city in Sierra County had it’s beginnings in 1854 when it was settled by some miners who called the town “Smith’s Neck”. In 1863 the name was changed to Loyalton as a sign of loyalty to the Union of the United States because the CivilĀ  War had begun. In 1901 Loyalton was incorporated with boundaries that encompassed over 50 square miles. Over time the city limits were finally reduced to less than one square mile.

As with much of Sierra and Plumas counties the early industries consisted of lumber, sawmills, mining and the enterprises associated with those activities. Agriculture became a mainstay that is still active today.
